Hawkeye Firefly 8S Action Camera – 90° Lens Version Review

Hawkeye Firefly 8S

Rating: 8 out of 10

I purchased this Hawkeye Firefly 8S camera for one reason and that is to make videos while moving (walking around etc).

The thing I hate about these small action cameras like GoPro etc which I have also, is that they have a very wide angle lens so that the video is distorted especially around the sides. The very wide angle is partly done to lessen the camera shake while on the move.

Camera Types

The Hawkeye Firefly 8S camera comes in two versions.  A 90° lens version and a 170° lens version of which the later appears to be standard with other action cameras for the wide field of view which they need.  This 90° version suits me greatly so I can make videos which are clear with no distortion.  Some of you will say that distortion can be rectified in editing, which is true, but that is just another job and most filming doesn’t require a fish eye look to it.

It also says it has 4k as well as the standard 1080hd which most people view video on anyway at this time.  But of course making higher resolution videos in 4k will use up more of your card storage space etc.

So without getting too deep and bogged down in technology, this great little camera takes videos which are crystal clear high definition and can be watched by most people with their televisions, pc’s and phones they have at present, and can be edited on most fairly modern spec pc’s.

It has a clear good size 42mm X 32mm screen on the back which can be timed to switch off at different times to suit for filming/viewing and to save battery life.

It can take high resolution still photographs and has a self timer and photo burst feature.

There is a little reflective mirror on the front for those of you who do selfies or to be used when making videos single handed.

A waterproof case.

Sound recording is very good out of it’s waterproof case but of course muffled when in the sealed case.

The usual usb ports for downloading video and mounting threads for tripods, selfie sticks and gimbals.  Plus an external microphone socket.

It films at 30fps for normal video.  60fps for action type video and 120fps for slow motion type video playback.

It has a gyro sensor which works quite well and stabilizes the video to a certain point, but is best turned off if using a gimbal?

Accessories Included

It comes with a host of different mounting accessories as standard.  A big plus here.

You could actually double this camera up as a Dashcam.  It has the attachments as standard.  Also it has motion detection which will switch on when it detects any movement.  So it then becomes a security camera for your car or other.

A spare battery can be purchased from Amazon for only £8.00!!

Action Camera Comparison

Is it as good as a GoPro?.   Well I have used it extensively now and made lots of videos with it.  To be honest I can’t fault this camera.  I paid £160.00 from Amazon which is less than half the price of a GoPro which doesn’t have the no distortion featured 90° lens.  On the spec, features, video quality and at £160.00.  You don’t need many brain cells to work out the GoPro comparison.

I have heard there is a newer model of this camera on the way this year.  But the sellers are still stocking the Firefly 8S as they are very sought after.  So keep a look out for this great little camera.  Could be on offer or even second hand.

Conclusion.  There is nothing about the Hawkeye Firefly 8S I have found which I do not like.  It has the spec for my use of making videos while on the move.  There are other features on this camera which may suit you.  Video quality is very good and not distorted that most people would ever notice.

Purchased myself.

Pros:     Everything above and simple to operate.

Cons:    None as yet.
